Key takeaways
- The median starting price for a monthly SEO plan was $1,000 across 38 providers that publish monthly plans.
- Local SEO starts lower: the median entry plan was $499 a month.
- Mid-tier plans had a median of $900 a month; top tiers $1,999.
- 38 of the 88 providers I checked don't publish prices at all.
"How much does SEO cost?" is one of the first questions every business owner asks, and one of the hardest to get a straight answer to. Most agencies say "it depends" and ask you to book a call.
So in October 2026 I went through the websites of 88 SEO providers, from large US agencies to small specialist shops, and recorded every published price I could find. 50 of them list real numbers. This post is what that data says.
The short answer
For a small or mid-sized US business, a monthly SEO plan typically costs $500 to $2,000 a month. Local SEO for a single location often starts lower, around $300 to $500. Large agencies and competitive national campaigns start at $2,500 and go well past $5,000.
| What you're buying | Median price | Typical range | Providers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry monthly SEO plan (all types) | $1,000/mo | $472 to $2,000 | 38 |
| Entry local SEO plan | $499/mo | $399 to $650 | 11 |
| Mid-tier plan | $900/mo | $699 to $1,650 | 15 |
| Top-tier plan | $1,999/mo | $1,074 to $3,249 | 16 |
| Minimum project size at agencies | $1,000 | $1,000 to $2,150 | 6 |
"Typical range" is the middle half of published prices (25th to 75th percentile). Cheapest entry plan found: $199 a month. Most expensive: $5,000 a month.
Why prices vary so much
A $300 plan and a $3,000 plan can both be called "SEO". The difference is almost always in four things:
- Who does the work. Large agencies pay for account managers, sales teams and offices. Freelancers and small specialists don't, which is why they can charge less for the same hands-on work.
- How much content is included. Content is the most expensive line item. One provider I checked charges $500 for a single 2,000-word post; plans that include four posts a month cost much more than plans with none.
- How links are earned. Real outreach to relevant sites takes time and costs more. Cheap plans that promise 100+ links a month usually rely on directory submissions, forum posts and bookmarks that do little for rankings.
- How competitive your market is. A plumber in a small town needs far less than a personal injury firm in Los Angeles or a SaaS company competing nationally.
What you get at each price level
Most providers that publish prices use three tiers, and they're remarkably consistent in what each tier includes.
Starter ($200 to $600 a month)
Usually 10 to 20 keywords, on-page work on about 5 pages, Google Business Profile optimization and some local citations. Content and link building are often left out or minimal. This tier suits local businesses in less competitive areas.
Growth ($600 to $1,500 a month)
Typically 20 to 40 keywords, 10 to 15 pages optimized, one to two blog posts a month and a small number of earned links. Many providers now add FAQ and schema work for AI Overviews at this level. This is the "most popular" tier on most pricing pages.
Authority ($1,500 to $3,500+ a month)
Around 50 or more keywords, most of the site optimized, four or more posts a month, regular link building and, increasingly, AI search visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features.
One-time SEO costs
- SEO audit: Specialist audits I found cost $1,000 for a technical-only audit and $2,000 for a full audit. A survey cited by WebFX found 43% of businesses pay between $101 and $750, so prices vary widely.
- Google Business Profile setup: Usually a one-off $300 to $500. Ongoing management by an agency or freelancer runs $125 to $400 a month per profile.
- Local citations: Roughly $2 to $4 per citation from citation-building services.
- Content: Published content packages ranged from about $375 to $500 per long-form post.
- Freelancer hourly rates: Upwork lists $15 to $35 an hour as a typical range for SEO experts on its platform; experienced consultants elsewhere charge $100 to $200+.
What AI search optimization costs
Generative engine optimization (GEO), the work of getting your brand cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, is newer and pricier. Agency retainers for small businesses are typically quoted at $1,500 to $5,000 a month, and standalone GEO audits I found started at about $1,299. More and more general SEO plans now include basic AI visibility work in their mid and top tiers.
Red flags when comparing prices
- Guaranteed #1 rankings. Google itself says there's no way to pay for a better ranking. Nobody can guarantee one.
- Hundreds of backlinks for a low price. Volume without relevance doesn't help and can hurt.
- No clear list of deliverables. You should know exactly how many pages, posts and links you're paying for each month.
- Long lock-in contracts for small budgets. Plenty of good providers work month to month.
- Reports with rankings but no traffic or leads. Rankings alone don't pay the bills.
How to choose a budget
Start with what one new customer is worth to you. If a new client is worth $3,000, an SEO plan that brings in one or two extra clients a month pays for itself many times over. If a customer is worth $50, you need a plan that drives volume cheaply, or a different channel.
If you're unsure where you stand, a one-time audit is the lowest-risk first step. It tells you what's broken and what a realistic monthly plan should include before you commit to anything.
You can see how my own plans compare to these market figures on the pricing page.
